What to do in Fiji - Nananu-i-ra

This pocket-sized paradise is a must on any northern Viti Levu itinerary. Beautifully hilly, the 3.5-sq-km island is surrounded by scalloped bays, white-sand beaches and mangroves. Cattle grazing has cleared much of the dense vegetation and today rolling hills of grass inhabit the interior. It's only 3km north of Ellington Wharf, but the atypical landscape and small enclave of wealthy holiday homes exaggerates the distance. Nananu-i-Ra is an excellent option for those who want an offshore-island experience but minimal boating and associated cost. It's also renowned for windsurfing and diving. The island has no roads and no village - most of the residents are of European descent so there's not much contact with traditional culture here but there is a nice & relax atmosphere all around. Bring a book & relax in a "hamaca" between two coconut trees or, just start the day fishfeeding. Enjoy life's little pleasures.
Accomodation: Nananu-i-Ra offers accommodation for all budgets. Originally a backpacker destination with low-cost rooms at MacDonalds Cottages and Betham's Beach Place, the island has developed more mid-range and luxury options. If you like sports (specially kitesurf), you will love the Safari Lodge, which offers lots of watersport activities such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, diving, fishing and more! It is often booked by New Zealanders & Australians sport-lovers & they also offer courses (= beginners are welcome).
But, food is not great... Tip: if you want something more than basic sandwiches and breakfast stuff, bring it with you.

Activities: Diving in the waters around Nananu-i-ra is a very popular activity with a number of dive operators in the area. Scuba diving available includes: Night Diving, Deep diving, Wreck diving (the 'Papuan Explorer') & Drift diving. All are great for underwater photography.
Since this island is surrounded by a coral reef there is excellent snorkelling just off shore. Especially on the Viti Levu side of the island if you are looking for a large number of tropical fish. The east side of the island, in particular Mile Long Beach is ideal for windsurfing and kite boarding. There are a few places to rent windsurfers and kite boards on the island. Check out
Safari Lodge, who operate from Ellington Wharf and on Nananu-i-Ra.
Safari Lodge also organise fishing and sailing activities. Sailing is for novice or experienced sailors and includes local guide/skipper. Great opportunity to explore deserted beaches, and good snorkelling spots. Fishing, again, can be enjoyed whether you are a keen fishing enthusiast or just want to try your luck! Game fishing, sport fishing and hand line fishing is available.
